Located in the South West of Kenya, straddling the Kenya-Tanzania border lies this gem. For every traveler, Amboseli is unmatched destination. The name is derived from the local Maasai dialect, more pronounced as “Ambusel” meaning salty dust!
Amboseli National Park (Kilimanjaro’s royal court) offers Exceptional resource Values ranging from Biodiversity, Social, Cultural and Scenic. It is the only Conservation Area in Kenya that has the highest population of Elephants that have been widely studied in the world. Elephants of Amboseli are critical component in the ecosystem. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other carnivores roam the plains of Amboseli too.
For a birder, this is a paradise. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in Amboseli. It is one of the Kenya’s 67 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and critical foraging and stop over sites for migratory bird species. Birds of Prey, Passerines and Waders all abound in Amboseli. The varied habitats from woodlands to open grasslands to wetlands in the swamp contributes widely to such high bird densities.
Amboseli National Park covers a land mass of 392 sq.km. However, the greater Amboseli Ecosystem stretches to over 6,000 sq.km. The outer area, covering more land mass is a community owned land (Group ranches) and are major and critical dispersal areas for Amboseli wildlife. These Group Ranches includes Olgulului, Selenkey, Imbirikani, Kimana, Kuku and Rombo.
